Design Plan for Creating a Farmhouse Cottage Bedroom

Hey there friend!

As I’ve mentioned before I’m finally giving our bedroom some much needed love this summer. It’s a space that has been put on the back burner for the past, eh hem, 4 years lol! But not for long! I’ve finally made some decisions about how I want the space to look & feel & formed a plan of attack aka a design plan πŸ˜€

I want our bedroom to be cozy & romantic, but also light & bright. Like the rest of the house I want it to be a neutral space where classic elements meet modern farmhouse cottage style, function, & comfort. High expectations for one room? Na! Mostly I just want it to be a place I want to lay my head down at the end of every day πŸ™‚ After all we spend much of our time in the bedroom & it should be a little haven we can retreat to.

The mood board below shows a gathering of some of the ideas I have in mind for creating our farmhouse cottage bedroom.

The Bed

When starting this design process I thought about what I wanted to have the most impact in the room & then designed outward from there. Being that this is a BEDroom it was kind of a no brainer that I wanted the focal point to be the bed. So for me this was the biggest decision & once it was made all the other aspects of the design fell into place.

When choosing a bed I wanted something cozy & classic. This isn’t a piece of furniture I plan on replacing often so it was important to me that it would stand the test of time. I literally looked for months until I stumbled across the bed pictured above. It’s by Magnolia Homes & carried by Value City Furniture. Jojo rarely misses & I think this bed is perfection! Poster beds are timeless & I love the incorporation of the shiplap inspired headboard. Plus the color is just right πŸ™‚ It was love at first sight!

Wall Color

So what I’m thinking is a change of wall color. Don’t get me wrong, I still love our blue walls but I’m ready for a change after 4 years. Since I’m leaning towards a more neutral palette I’m going to go with a shade of white. Whites can be tricky but we’ll get into that in another post πŸ˜‰ I’ve been pulling a lot of inspiration from Instagram these days & am so drawn to the white spaces I see on there. WardrobeΒ

The other big piece of furniture I’ll be hunting for is a wardrobe or armoire. Our little home has limited storage (we share 1 small closet) so this would be a piece that will both highly functional & aesthetically pleasing as well. I’ll be hitting up all local vintage/antique shops & estate auctions in hopes of finding the perfect one. I know that I want it to be white, but as you all know I don’t mind painting whatever I find if need be πŸ˜‰

Lighting

Let’s talk lighting! Eeek! I cannot stress the importance of lighting enough! I’m on a budget of course but I don’t think lighting is a place to scrimp. Lighting can make or break a room all on its own. It sets the tone for the space & I want our bedroom to feel romantic & cozy. I’ll achieve this by adding some kind of chandelier to the room. I’m also thinking about doing something a bit different for our bedside lighting. Instead of regular lamps I’m thinking it would be fun to do some farmhouse/industrial wall sconces like the one pictured above.

Textiles

Textiles are such an important element of design & they happen to be one of my very favorites! Textiles are what make a space comfy & add texture, which are 2 very important things in a bedroom! I want our room to feel cozy with lots of neutral fluffy pillows, a textured quilt on the bed. Linen (or linen like ;)) curtains on the windows, & maybe either a traditionally patterned rug or chunky natural fiber to soften the space & provide interest.

Decor

I’ll definitely add some pops of greenery around & I’m sure you’ll see some of my blue mason collection but I plan to keep the decor to a minimum. However, I’m bound to add some white chippy or galvanized goodness in there somewhere πŸ˜‰
