Part 14: DIY Kitchen Remodel and Structural Wall Removal
…..Also Known As Part 1: Kitchen Reveal!
We did it!!! The diy kitchen remodel is finally done! The big push came on a Saturday and we actually finished it at around 11pm that night 🙂 waking up to it being done on Sunday morning made it all 100% worth it!
Renovation – “restore to a good state of repair.”
Remodel – “to change the structure or form of something.”
We’ve done all kinds of renovations in our little home, but this is the only major remodel we’ve done or have plans to do. It proved to us that there’s no project too big if you do your research and take it one step at a time. It also proved Murphy’s Law definitely applies to remodeling lol! It’s funny because the thing we worried about most was removing that structural wall and installing the beam, but in reality it was raising the ceiling that became the bigger project.
Because we were on a tight budget we planned and bought materials far in advance. We also estimated costs in advance as much as we could so we’d be prepared. One piece of advice we were given was to plan to spend double our estimate on unforeseen costs. While I’m sure this is good advice it wasn’t the case on this particular remodel. Luckily for us most of the unexpected challenges we faced were labor based and just a matter of us figuring them out. Which means they cost time, not money. All in we spent between $1200-1500, which is pretty amazing considering the results, which you can see for yourself below 😀
As you can see I ended up painting the beam white. Up until I saw it wrapped with new wood I had every intention of staining it. But as you can see we have 4 doors that are their original dark stain color that all sit behind it and I decided it would be too heavy feeling and dark on that side of the room with a dark beam overhead. Also the trim running up the wall to meet the beam made it similar to the door frames in the house. I didn’t think it would look right for just the top to be stained. Anyway I’m beyond happy with how it all turned out 🙂
Here’s the view from view from the living room.
You might be wondering why it says “Part 1” at the top, and that’s because while the actual kitchen remodel is done we still have lots to share with you! Since these pictures were taken we’ve made some decor changes and appliance upgrades 🙂 and I want to get into all the sweet little decorative details that make it feel like home.
*Here are a few side-by-side before and afters for comparison!
People who stepped foot in our home during construction were floored by the amount of mess and the amount of work. However, if I had it to do all over again I would in a heartbeat 🙂
I hope seeing these photos and reading about this remodel has inspired you, even in some small way, on your own journey creating a home you love! Because believe me if we can do it anyone can! Lol! I have found that if you want something done you absolutely can Do It Yourself 😀
Thanks so much for visiting our little blog!
