Decorating After Christmas

Happy New Year friend!

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared our bedroom so I thought I would take this opportunity, because of the timing, to also talk about decorating after Christmas.

Decorating After Christmas

I’ve been asked about how I decorate after Christmas many times this year so hopefully this will answer that question! First of all welcome to our bedroom! Like every other room in our home it’s not huge lol! But that’s okay by us because it’s comfy and cozy and well we mostly use it for sleeping lol!

Also I was really hoping to shoot this space on a sunny day but those are few and far between here in good ‘ol Southern IL ha!

I feel like I should also address the elephant in the room, or the cat rather 😉 Even if you haven’t met our sweet feline just know that he’s always around and on this particular day he chose to nap during this shoot so I just went with it 😉

Decorating After Christmas

Decorating after Christmas is over can seem kind of tricky. Okay so the overwhelming amount of Christmas decor has been taken down, now what? In years past I remember having that huge urge to take everything down and pack it away and start fresh with a clean slate. But then also feeling like our home was stark, empty, and naked feeling haha!

Decorate Smart

Well this year is different. I finally found what feels like, for me at least, the perfect decorating solution to this post Christmas decor dilemma. This year I decorated smart. I decorated our home to feel like our home. I didn’t jump on any big trend of the year band wagons. I stayed true to my taste and our home’s style.

Transitioning Through the Season

Let me explain what that means. The holiday decor I bought and set out in November could easily stay out until the end of winter. I’ve tweaked it of course but if you look back at our holiday tablescape or our living room or even at what holiday decor I was drawn to way back in November then you’ll see what I mean. From Thanksgiving to Christmas I added our real Christmas trees and some dried oranges around the house.

Decor After the Holidays

Now that Christmas is over I took the oranges down and put the stockings away and….that’s basically it. Voile it’s winter decor! I’ve said it before, but the main thing that I change with the seasons is greenery. I love bringing natural elements into my decor, and I also like the greenery inside of our home to match what’s going on outside.

How I Decorate After Christmas

For me transitioning from Christmas decor to winter means simply taking down all the really Christmas-y things, but keeping up the winter greenery. I’ll probably take down our trees soon because we’ve had them awhile now. But otherwise the winter greenery will be staying along with all the cozy candles I put out at Christmastime.

*Side note: All the natural or live greenery that I either bought or brought in from outside has dried and it holding up well!

Not a Lot of Change

Most of our rooms including our bedroom look basically the same as they did during Christmas because I stayed so neutral and minimal. I even kept our ornaments up on this tree because they’re sheep!

I found them at Target and thought they would be perfect in a bedroom because you know counting sheep to fall asleep haha! We’ll be enjoying them a bit longer!

You Can Do It Too!

But even if you went Christmas crazy you could apply the same rules! Taking down the really obvious Christmas decor aka stockings, tree ornaments, anything red haha (if that’s part of your normal color palette of course) etc. will leave you with simple and cozy winter decor 🙂

That’s really it. Winter decor for me means evergreens, cozy blankets and textiles, candles, and simplicity after the busy holidays. I hope you’re enjoying the fresh start of a new year!

I will also be adding some paperwhites that I’m forcing. Article on that coming soon!
