Planning the Brick Design

This porch is on the side of our home, but it’s the only one we currently have. The actual front porch had fallen in enough that the previous owners had to remove it for insurance purposes long before we moved in. We can’t wait to fully restore in one day, but for now I’ve decided to give this little side porch some love staring with the walkway! We’ve found quite a bit of reclaimed brick around the property and this seems like a perfect way to put some of it to use 🙂

There were already pavers here so after removing them I dug out a bit more dirt to make sure the bricks sat flush with the ground. Then I laid down weed barrier and sand on top of that. The next thing I had to figure out was what pattern I wanted to create. Below were some options I considered before deciding on a herringbone pattern.

Y’all can watch me lay the brick along with my “helpers” who moved the camera on at least three occasions lol! I started near the step and worked my way from the center out. It took some wiggling and adjusting, but overall was an easy process once I got started. You can see by the photo below Henry approved my progress after day one 😉

Finishing the Brick Paver Walkway

After all the full sized bricks were in place I filled in the gap beside the step and the opposite end. I used broken pieces that were as close in size and shape. After I was happy with how it look I used polymeric sand to fill in all the gaps.

Filling in the Brick Gaps

To do this I poured a few piles of sand on top and swept it across them with a broom until all the gaps were filled. Then you want to make sure you get as much sand off the bricks as possible before you wet the sand. Once you’ve done that then you saturate the sand so it will harden.

I am SO happy with how this brick walkway turned out! It adds so much interest and character while also looks and feels original! I actually laid a reclaimed brick pathway at our last house not long before we moved and didn’t get a chance to document it here. So I wanted to show what an impact you could make doing this *fairly* easy project! Plus the brick was free!

I’m currently working on the actual porch and just finished the floors so I’ll be sharing that with ya soon! Then on to some fresh paint and a few other things 😉

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!
