Freestanding or Unfitted Kitchen

I love reading about the history of the architecture and design styles during the period of our home. It was built some time in the 1880s, which was during the Victorian era. It doesn’t have as ornate details as some Victorian homes so it falls into the Folk Victorian category, where utility played a big role. This makes sense since since it’s a farmhouse.

It’s interesting to see what the rooms in these houses would have included, their layouts, and how they were used. Kitchens during this time would have been freestanding or unfitted. Meaning that cabinets and appliances weren’t built in. Oftentimes they had mismatched cabinetry, and a central workspace. They were designed with function first.

I have been pinning kitchens like these for years and never really knew it was a whole thing! Haha! Unfitted kitchens are making a huge comeback and I can see why!

They’re packed with character and charm! I’ve loved antiques for as long as I can remember. Incorporating them in the kitchen like this honestly makes the kitchen feel like the rest of the house. It’s collected and cozy! It also gives you more freedom to switch things up. And we are loving it’s function!

Farmhouse Kitchen Island

Originally we had the sink in the center of the room within our antique store counter island. I’d always imagined having the picturesque farmhouse sink under a window, but I’d choose our large windows over that every time! We thought the island would be a good place for it, but we needed more workspace. So we swapped it for this antique harvest table that we already had! I’ll be sharing all about this awesome table soon!

Annnd speaking of dreams 😉 I’m wondering how long I’ll have to pick my jaw up off the floor every time I walk in here! Lol! After almost a year of having her she’s finally home y’all!! This cabinet absolutely makes this kitchen! It just feels right!  You can see what this antique shaker style cabinet looked like when we got her HERE!  I’ll get into how I refinished her soon! 😉

Open Shelving

On the other side of the kitchen we went ahead and put the shaker style open shelving we built back up. Our plan is to either build or find another antique cabinet for this spot. And Ed really wants to build one! We’ll probably build a base first and then the upper part later, so we can enjoy the shelves a bit longer. We both really like how the shelving looks, but a wood toned base would look awesome!

We moved the butcher block to a different spot that makes more use of the other side of the kitchen, which you can see more of below!

Kitchen Decor

I haven’t added much decor to the room because I wanted to enjoy the simplicity of just having it furnished with the basics. I’m also still working on getting everything put away after our house has been in shambles the last two months from this renovation lol!

But you better believe Christmas is coming out this week! I’ll be sharing that on Instagram as well as a few other decisions I need to make about the kitchen. You can follow along @midcounty_journal

I’m also finally setting some time aside over the holidays to do a little investigating on the history of our home! I’ll report what I find!

I have to say I feel like I’ve been writing this article, this story of our kitchen in my head for a very long time. It has not been an easy process getting it here, and we still have things left to do, but we made it. When everything was finally in it’s place I stood back and told Ed, “I think we’ve really done something special here”. It’s in that moment that these renovations are worth it. It’s the most gratifying and fulfilling creative experience I’ve ever had. And it’s such an honor to be able to share it with you.

Thank you so much for your support, and as always for stopping by the blog today!
