How to Create a Plate Gallery Wall

Hey there!

Today I’m excited to share how to create a plate gallery wall with you! This is definitely one of my favorite recent decor projects and I wish I hadn’t waited so long to try it! Plate gallery walls have been seen in design for a very long time and I’m glad they’re making a huge comeback. I find them to be such a timeless fun decor idea!

I’ve been collecting antique dishes, specifically Ironstone, for several years and this is such a beautiful way to enjoy a part of that collection. Thrift and antique stores are a great place to find plates and I’d also check your local Facebook Marketplace. But I’ll link a few similar or exactly like mine for you below too. You could do a variety of mismatched plates in different shapes and colors, or swap out plates as you find different ones or even seasonally. The sky is the limit with this creative project! Let’s jump in to how I did it!

How to Create a Plate Gallery Wall

Creating a Plate Wall Template

To start I played around with some plates until I came up with a design I liked. Basically plates were arranged and then rearranged one our kitchen floor for a couple days 😉 Then I decided the easiest way to get it on the wall was to create a template. I used this large roll of paper to trace them on, it’s honestly has come in handy for several DIY projects. Now the spacing before the tracing did take some time. I eyeballed it and then checked each gap between the plates with a measuring tape before I traced them out.

Another option I considered was creating more a random whimsical design. If you went this route there would be much less pressure on the spacing being correct 😉

Wall Plate Hangers

I’ve tried 2 other types of plate hangers. The traditional wire ones and another kind that had a sticky back on it that I ended up not trusting to hold a plate. Now the wire ones have always worked fine but I wanted a cleaner look this go round. I had seen these disc hangers in my search and they seemed to have good reviews. I’m happy to report that they’re awesome! I got a variety of the 2″, 3″, and 4″ sizes for my plates you’ll find linked in the pics below.

Attaching the Plate Hangers

To attach the plate hangers I followed the directions they came with carefully. First I washed each plate with warm soapy water. Then I decided which size I would use for each plate. Next I dipped a couple of fingers in water and gently rubbed the back of the discs to activate the adhesive. Then I firmly pressed the disc onto the plate in the position that I wanted. After each plate had a disc I let them dry over night. In the morning I checked to make sure each was firmly attached.

Hanging the Plates

After making sure each plate was ready to hang I taped my template to the wall. To hang the plates I would hold the plate on the template using my pencil to go around it making sure it was in the right place. And then I would sneak my pencil behind the plate and mark just above the plate hanger. Then I would remove the plate and hammer in the nail. I stepped back to check placement after each plate was hung.

Once all the plates were up and I was happy with how it looked, I took them back down, removed the template from the wall, and hung the plates back up.

I wanted a design that took up some space on this wall and that felt floral inspired and turned out better than I even expected! I was nervous going into it since it was something new for me but it was much easier than I’d anticipated. So I think it’s safe to say this is just the first plate gallery wall you’ll see in our home. And I highly recommend creating one yourself! Let me know if you do or have any questions!

Sending love your way!
