How to Hang Porch Swings with Rope
Hey friend!
I’m excited to share about how to hang porch swings with rope! I definitely wanted ropes instead of chains for the porch swings, but didn’t know if it would happen right away because I wasn’t sure how it would work and I was ready to wrap the porch project up for now.
But then we opened the chains that came with the swings and realized they were WAY too short, which is something to note if you purchase the same swings as us. Anyway it ended up being much easier to modify than I thought and they made ALL the difference aesthetically!

The Porch Swings
The porch swings I got can be found HERE! I bought them because they’re the right size and price point since I wanted 2 of them. As far as quality goes, aside from the short chains, I can’t complain. But I will add that anytime we purchase furniture like this I always add more support with additional screws.

Modifying the Swings
After taking a quick look I realized that modifying them could be as easy as switching out some hardware. Originally you would just put a screw through the end of the chain and then through the whole. Then you would fasten it with a nut and washer. I took one of the screws with me to make sure it would be the right size and found these screw eye hooks at Home Depot. I bought 4 for each swing, 2 for the front and 2 for the back.
Then I simply put them in and used a nut fastener to keep them in place.
Adding the Ropes
After that Ed added the ropes. I found this rope on Amazon. It’s a half inch. I think the 3/4 option would have looked even better and if we ever have to replace these we’ll be sizing up. After running the rope through each side of the swings we cut them to an approximate length leaving them a bit long. Then we tied them together behind the swings.
We left them long so that we could adjust them as needed. The ropes will also stretch quite a bit, which is why we didn’t tie them in a super cray knot. This was just something we were trying out, but I actually love the look of them tied in the back. However, because of the ropes twisting we’ll be changing them once things settle.
Hanging the Swings
We hung them from the ceiling using a 2 1/2 inch eye screw hooks. Then the ropes are simply looped through the other interlocking spring snaps. We’ve noticed that the ropes twist on their own which doesn’t bother us for now 😉 Once they settle we’ll knot them on the hooks in the back instead of the knot behind the swings to prevent this.

This is a pretty simple little switcharoo project that makes a huge difference in how these swings looked! I can’t even tell you how much we’ve been enjoying this porch! From coffee to wine this is where you can find me! 😉 Let me know if you have any questions! I linked the other porch and walkway posts below!
