Neutral Farmhouse Paint Colors
Hey there!
Choosing paint colors can be tricky business! But I think the hardest part this go-round for me was finding the time to get the paint I chose up on the walls! It’s been a busy hectic month! However, the living room is almost painted and couldn’t wait to show you the neutral farmhouse paint colors I chose!
Paint Samples
Sherwin Williams has tons of beautiful neutral paint choices and options! I bought 6 sample pots to try out: Extra White, Pure White, Alabaster, White Duck, Natural Choice, and Natural Choice cut but 25%, which shows a slightly lighter version keeping the same tone. If you’re painting over an existing color, in my case dark red, make sure to put a couple coats of a white or primer on the wall first. This way you get a true reading of your sample colors. Otherwise they may not read their true color over the top of something else.
I tried out several color combinations for the walls and trim with the samples I got. I really liked the Natural Choice for the trim and wainscoting with the walls being Pure White, but at the end of the day I chose to stay with super classic white trim and wainscoting instead.
True White
The only problem I ran into was that none of the white sample pots or color cards (I think I took 27 lol) read true white to me. When I say true white I mean a white that doesn’t read warm, having yellow or red undertones, or cool, having blue or grey undertones. I wanted a very neutral just white white.
Then after making another trip to SW I found it! In my humble opinion the only “white” of theirs that reads true white is High Reflective White. I LOVE this color! It’s beautiful! Crisp and clean and just plain ol white like I wanted!
Paint Choices
So above are the colors I chose and what I will be using each on. High Reflective White in SW Emerald paint will be used on all the trim, wainscoting, and ceilings throughout the main level. Natural Choice in SW Captivate will be used on the living room walls. And Pure White in SW Captivate will be used on all the rest of the walls throughout the house, upstairs and down. And all paint will be in a Satin finish.
Neutral Farmhouse Paint Colors
I really just want all the walls to get a fresh white coat of paint on them. I look at it like a clean canvas or backdrop for everything else. The living room should be done this week and I CANNOT wait for you to see it! It’s truly amazing what paint can do! If you missed the Farmhouse Before Tour check it out HERE! Okay now I better get back to it! 😉

May I ask why you’re using a different white on just the living room?
Amanda
Absolutely! I chose a different shade for that space because I don’t plan on putting up any window treatments in that room so I wanted the wall color to be a bit darker, warmer, and cozier feeling 🙂

It should all look great, can’t wait to see it all done! I so want to repaint all my walls, but just can’t do it right now. Happy Fall!
Amanda
Thank you! I’m so happy with the outcome and will be sharing the living room reveal soon!

Whites make me crazy! I have never EVER been able to find a white I like – and it is a huuuuuuge deal to change with my double storied home and allllllll the trim and wainscoting we painted.
My walls in tv are too stark. My walls everywhere in dining/foyer/living/loft is too pink and omg allll my wainscoting is too greyish purple. I can’t even think about it w/o tears. : – (

Oh man I’m so sorry and I totally get it! That’s why it took me so long to get this article done. I really wanted to be sure about the whites I chose because like you said painting an entire house is a big undertaking! I hope this article helped even a little and that you are able to find the perfect shade for each space! Good luck!

Who woulda thought picking white paint could be so hard? I need to paint my bedroom and I’m facing the same dilemma which my hubby doesn’t understand at all!
Amanda
My best advice it to put some samples up and live with them for a couple days, checking them out at different times of the day to see how they look in different lighting. Good luck!!

Thank you for this post! I’ve saved it to my Pinterest page for reference because we are about to paint the inside of our tiny rental house. You have done my research for me!
Amanda
Oh goodness I’m so glad it was helpful for you! Good luck painting! I love small homes!

I’ve been shopping and sampling whites for a couple of weeks now and it’s hard! I finally chose one for the dining room, but the other rooms are still up for grabs. All the rooms have different exposures, so not one white is the right one for all. I’m going to sample your High Reflective White and Natural Choice. Fingers crossed. Can’t wait to see the beautiful results in your home!
Amanda
It is hard! I definitely know what you mean about how lighting makes all the difference too! I hope you find the perfect shade for each space!

Omg living vicariously on your beautiful farm! Thanks so much for sharing your paint choices as I have been mulling over SW to completely repaint the interior of my home. Off the subject, but do guys have any future plans to remove the wall between kitchen and family room for an open concept? I just kept envisioning it when watching your walk-thru. Can’t wait to watch the transformation. 🙂
Amanda
Yay! I’m so glad it was helpful! No open concept plans as of now! We’d like to keep the house as original as possible 🙂
