The First Lamb was Born on Midcounty Farm!

Hi friend!

I have SO much to catch you up on! We’ve been in go mode the past few weeks and I haven’t really had a minute to sit down and document everything! But I thought I’d start with the sweetest surprise! Clementine had a lamb!! We had NO idea she was pregnant! We had the boys, or ram and wether, separated from the ewes all Fall and Winter, which is Babydoll breeding season. But somehow, we’re assuming through the fence, Clementine and Griffin found a way! Lol!

Watching His Birth

I went out to let the sheep on pasture to find Clementine in labor. I was able to capture the whole thing and shared it on Instagram in a highlight on my profile. It was so emotional!! I was anxious and scared for Clementine. Luckily I had started putting our lambing kit together so I ran and grabbed our supplies. She labored for about 40 minutes did and we welcomed a little healthy boy! Witnessing the birth was such a privilege and an experience I’ll never forget!

First Lamb, Surprise Lamb

I was so completely shocked even a couple days after he was born! I wanted our girls to wait until they were 2 before lambing and being mommas. I beat myself up about it. I spend SO much time with our sheep! How did I miss the late signs, especially the late ones of Clementine being pregnant? After finally getting some sleep a few days later, and having talked to our vet and my sheep mentor I feel differently.

Our vet said it happens more often than you would think because nature finds a way! And my sheep mentor said with their first lamb, especially a single, there’s often little evidence until right before the birth. This little lamb made me remember how little is actually in our control, and that sometimes that can be a very beautiful thing 🙂 Now I just feel so blessed that he’s here and watching Clementine become a momma has been amazing to witness too! She’s a natural!

Franklin the Babydoll Lamb

After pretending to think about it for a day we decided to keep him since he was such a wonderful unexpected surprise, and the first baby born on the farm 😉 We named him Franklin and I am just over the moon in love! He’ll get to live his whole life with his mom, dad, aunties, and uncle! And I’ll get the experience of raising a sheep from birth on!

We’ll be castrating him so he’ll be a wether like his uncle Theodore. Babydoll wethers are the sweetest!

Henry our LGD (who you can read about HERE) is also in love with this little one! Henry will be 6 months old June first so he’s still very much a playful puppy, but it has been amazing to watch his natural protective instincts with these lambs!

Franklin was born just 3 days prior to me picking up our other 2 ewe lambs. It was a wonderfully full and exciting week! I’ll share them in their own dedicated post soon, not to be overshadowed by this little fella 😉  Franklin just turned one week old and is thriving and hopping around the pasture like a little jumping bean! We had a lamb born on the farm y’all! I still can’t believe I get to write that sentence!
