Victorian Farmhouse Chair Railing
Hi there!
The Victorian farmhouse chair railing is up! I decided to combine 3 pieces of moulding to create a more custom chair railing that mimics the architectural details found throughout the house. I LOVE how it turned out!

Chair Railing
I combined a 1 x 3 primed board that sits against the wall, a 1 x 2 inch primed board that sits on top of that, and a 1 inch concave moulding piece that rests underneath the top piece. It creates a bit of a ledge for picture frames, decor, etc. but also keeps a clean simple look that mirrors the window header mouldings throughout the house.

Tools and Materials Needed for Chair Railing
To install the chair railing I used
And I used the following lumber/moulding pieces
How to Install the Chair Railing
I start by making my 45′ angle cut on the 1 x 3 board that will sit flush against the wall. Then I measure the wall for the length, but I also hold the board up to the wall and mark it. I have found that this method of measuring twice eliminates errors. After I cut the board to length I nailed it in place.
Then I moved on to the 1×2 top board, and followed the same procedure. I nailed it through the top into the 1 x 3. Then I added the concave piece below it.
I did this until I had worked my way around the whole room.

I’m so happy with how it turned out! I love that it’s simple but adds a little something 🙂 Next up is the crown moulding. I’ll needs Ed’s help for that since the pieces are so long. These finishing details make all the difference! Oh and the gorgeous reclaimed flooring should be here soon!! Eeek!

Love the chair rail. Are you going to give the beadboard more coats of paint? In the pictures it looks as if you can see the dark wood underneath. That might be the look you’re going for tho since the house is so old. I’m not judging just curious. I always love everything you do.

Yes! I gave it another coat after this, but it still needs one more! Thanks so much!

I honestly love the darker color on those walls that sets a mood against that beautiful white beadboard. There’s SO much light in that room that the perfect charcoal, not black, no green undertones and no pinky/purple undertones, BTW not even sure what color that equates to, would be so pretty in there. If there was a color called “cloudy day” and it had all of those undertones, “check” !!!

Love the chair rail, love the whole room! Wasn’t too sure about the dark gray, but with the rail up it’s wonderful! I want to try it in my own dining room soon.

This is such a great idea! Also love the drama of the darker gray. Was hoping you’d be brave and go for it!! Can’t wait to see the crown and base go in. You inspire me daily
