Victorian Farmhouse Color Palette

Hey there buddy!

I hope your year is off to a good start! I’ve been busy planning out upcoming projects and renovations, and trying to get the house organized a bit. But I wanted to kick off the new year by sharing our Victorian Farmhouse Color Palette! Oh and I painted the living room again…again 😀

Living Room Paint Color

The paint color is Vintage Pewter DC-009 by Behr in a matte finish. I spotted it while we were at The Home Depot getting supplies for the kitchen reno. I really liked the Blank Canvas color and you can expect to see it pop up again, but in this room I still craved more contrast to show off the architectural details. Before that I had tried a darker color in here too, but the undertone was too green and it clashed with the wallpaper mural in the kitchen. Vintage Pewter is more of a mid tone that is comparable to Benjamin Moor’s Revere Pewter. It provides enough contrast while still feeling soft, and it ties in with the wallpaper mural even more perfectly in person.

I used Behr’s Dynasty line again and am still floored by the coverage. It took less than a gallon to paint this room, and was well worth squeezing it in during the kitchen renovation 😉 Vintage Pewter is the color I’ve been looking for and really inspired this color palette post.

Until now my main goal has been renovation. I’ve focused my effort and budget on getting the actual rooms finished before I really dove into all the decorating details too much. But if you go by how many rooms there are in the house we are officially halfway finished with the interior! Whoo hoo! And I feel like we’ve made enough progress that I can start spending some time going back through rooms with this palette.

How I Choose a Color Palette

This decision came from a  combination of listening to the house, what I’m naturally drawn to, and by looking at some time period colors. I’ve said from the beginning “we’re here for the views”, and so naturally I’m inspired by them. I want to fill the rooms with a balance of warm and cool, dark and light, neutral earth tones. And not so coincidentally you’ll also find the ones I chose within the historical Victorian paint palette 🙂

On the graphic above you can see the five main color tones at the top, and the three secondary ones at the bottom. I love them all! They feel like home to me 🙂

Mood Board Palette

The mood board above shows some of the colors, textures, and finishes in our home that I’ll be incorporating throughout.  The warmth of our multi toned heart pine floors really ground each room and tie all the other wood furnishings together. Our three exposed brick chimneys can be found in almost every room in the house and you’ll see me pull from that brick color.

We also have this gorgeous original cobalt stained glass transom window above the front door. I was told by a previous owner that the summer kitchen had a large one in it as well before it was sadly torn down. It makes me think of the haint blue porch ceilings and their lore. Regardless of the meaning blue is here to stay in our color palette. And of course so is green because plants, greenery, and again that nod to nature? Yes please! 😉

Another source of inspiration for me is the antique sheep painting I found shortly after we bought the farm. I love the moodiness! All the colors from the palette can also be found in it too.

Textures and Finishes

Even though the rooms will be very neutral I’ll be adding tons of patterns and texture for interest. I love stripes, herringbone, and nature inspired pattered textiles. This texture is also found on the beadboard walls, tongue and groove ceiling, and wallpaper. I’ll be sharing some rug options for this room soon!

I prefer mixing finishes and will be predominantly using black, antique brass, and chrome throughout. Black iron was already here on the hardware under layers of paint. Chrome in the kitchen feels very utilitarian and at home in that room on our stove and sink. But I also love bringing in the warm brass with cabinet hardware and other decor. Again these bring the combination of light, dark, cool, and warm tones from the palette.

I want our home to feel welcoming and comfortable. Warm, yet light and airy. I like transitional decor that leans heavily on vintage furnishings with some modern touches or new takes on time period design. I want our home to look new old lol! And I never feel more at connected and happy then when I’m in nature so bringing a bit of that feeling inside with this palette just makes sense 🙂 I’m excited to share the process with you as I go!

Thanks for stopping by the blog today!

Sending so much love!
